Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) students, faculty, staff, board members, and supporters gathered on January 20, 2023, to announce the award won by the medical school
“At BCOM we are given a platform through which our stories really matter,” BCOM Student Doctor and Executive Board President of Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Student Government Association Alberto Velasco said as the school unveiled its 2022 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
“What we experience, where we are from … is such an important tool,” said BCOM Board of Trustees Vice Chair Denise Gonzales, MD, who grew up in southern Doña Ana County.
“I’m honored to be part of this great medical school from the very beginning,” said Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine President and CEO John Hummer.
“This organization is all about diversity, equity and inclusion,” said Board Chair John Harris, who is CEO of Memorial Medical Center.
“Our diversity drives our excellence,” said BCOM Dean William Pieratt, DO.

In addition to BCOM students and staff, the award honors the indigenous people who were inhabitants of the BCOM site, said Chief Diversity Officer Erica Hughey.
“Of all students enrolled this year at Burrell College, 57 percent are Female and 23 percent are underrepresented minorities in medicine,” BCOM said in a news release. “This is the first time the college has been selected for recognition. This award is presented by the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. Burrell was one of six osteopathic medical schools to receive this honor.”
Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine broke ground in 2015 at 3501 Arrowhead Drive on the New Mexico State University campus in 2015 and welcomed its first class in 2016. Its first class graduated in 2020.
